Overall dimensions, framed: 66 x 54.5 cm
The use of light, tonality and composition are typical for the Norwegian landscapes of Allart van Everdingen

The present atmospheric painting is possibly the work of Allart van Everdingen. Between 1640 and 1644, Everdingen traveled to Norway and Sweden, and this trip deeply influenced his output. Everdingen has painted several Norwegian landscapes - a subject that must have seemed exotic to his Dutch countrymen. The present work is closely based on other compositions. The coloring, the use of light and the almost monochrome rocky landscape set against a cloudy sky are typical for the oeuvre of the artist.

The painting is mounted in a carved wood frame. The canvas has been relined. The paint surface is rather thin to the darker tones. There is extensive retouching to the sky and to the foreground, as well as lines of strengthening to the darker details of the landscape. The frame shows minor wear. The overall dimensions, framed, are 66 x 54.5 cm. The stretcher frame measures 50 x 38 cm.

Allart van Everdingen (1621-1675)

Allart (Aldert) van Everdingen was a Dutch painter who studied with Roelant Savery in Utrecht and Pieter de Molijn in Haarlem. His brother, Cesar van Everdingen (1606-1679), also worked as a painter of historical scenes and portraits.

Everdingen’s favorite subjects were landscapes. He also painted some marines, mainly in his early period. Between 1640 and 1644, he made trips to Sweden and probably Norway. The rocky mountains, the forests, the waterfalls and the sea surges of Scandinavia deeply influenced his output. In 1645, Everdingen was admitted to the Haarlem Guild of St. Luke, but moved to Amsterdam in 1651.

Besides paintings, Everdingen was active as an etcher. Today, his works can be found in high-ranking museums, including the Gemäldegalerie in Dresden, the Munich Pinakothek, the Louvre in Paris and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. His works give evidence of a high artistic quality, having inspired such famous artists as Jacob von Ruisdael (1628/29-1682) from Haarlem.
