This small-scale oil sketch by Paul Herman shows the exceptional composer Franz Liszt (1811-1886), who is easily recognizable by his typical haircut – in German the similarly coiffed Cotton-top tamarins are consequently named ‘Liszt monkey’ – and the strict facial features.
The work is in fair condition. It shows partially colour loss and small vertical cracks. Along the lower edge there are little touch-ups. In the lower right the painting is signed ‘Paul Herman‘. It measures 29.7 x 23.2 cm.
