This painting shows a flock of chickens with several hatchlings and a cock. The animals are shown on a farm in the courtyard and spread on a dunghill, a basket or on a perch. Fowls, especially chickens are a dominant motif of the Munich artist. Born in Munich in 1862, Otto Scheuerer (1862-1934) studied art at the Academy of Munich. Working in the realist manner of the late 19th century, the artist specialized in the depiction of poultry and forest animals.
The painting is signed and inscribed lower left ‘Otto Scheuerer Mch.’. It is varnished and shows slight frame-related scuffing along the edges with an associated paint loss in the upper left corner. The painting measures 32.3 x 40.3 cm. The framed dimensions are 59 x 49 cm. (fea)
