Description
Belgium, Ende 19.Jh.
After Eugène Joseph Verboeckhoven (1799-1881) – Belgium animal and landscape painter
Carved gilded ornament frame
Overall dimensions framed: 50 x 61.5 cm
Good condition
With loose, sketchy brushstrokes the painter has captured this scene with cows. In the foreground in front of a small forest three cows and a shepherd and shepherdess are grouped around a truncated willow. On the right a view of a wide, flat landscape is revealed in which in several cows are grazing. A cloudy sky overstretches the scene. Eugène Joseph Verboeckhoven (1799-1881) debuted after studying under Albert Voituron and B.P. Ommeganck in Ghent. He was known as an excellent animal painter. Cows were next to sheep, horses and donkeys, one of his favorite motifs which he captured in a careful drawing and smooth painting.
The unsigned painting on canvas is laid on plywood, varnished and shows slight frame-related scuffing. There are occasional tiny paint losses and minor craquelure. The painting is overall in good condition. The frame also is in good condition with slight signs of wear. The painting measures 33.2 x 44.3 cm. The framed dimensions are 50 x 61.5 cm. (fea)
