With the present work the French artist Eugène Henri Cauchois has created one of his typical still lifes depicting a beautiful bouquet of daisies and poppies next to a bowl with plums and currants. The reds and blues of the fruit as well as the whites of the flowers shine against the indistinct brown background. Cauchois’ lively and fresh compositions with flowers and fruit were very popular and he was honored with numerous awards, regularly exhibiting his floral and genre paintings at the Parisian salon from 1874 onwards.
The painting is in overall good condition. The canvas has been relined. The edges show abrasions due to rubbing of the frame. There is a large area of retouching in the upper left corner, as well as scattered retouchings to the rest of the background, the flowers and the fruits. The work is signed lower right ‘H. Cauchois’. The frame shows some wear. The framed work measures 85.5 x 74.5 cm, the stretcher frame measures 64 x 54 cm. (tfa)
