Ferdinand Knab was an academic painter of architectural fragments in atmospheric landscapes; his paintings fetch up to €23,000 at international auctions
This poetic depiction of a temple ruin is a typical composition by the Munich painter Ferdinand Knab. His architectural motifs were deeply related to his impressions of Italy, where he had been travelling for a year. The present scenery shows a ruin covered with thick vegetation and beautiful rose bushes. The architecture is presented at sunset that renders the painting its romantic touch. The center reveals a delicate depiction of a woman dressed with flowing fabrics so that she appears like an ancient sculpture.
The painting is in good condition considering its age. It is signed and dated lower left ‘F. KNAB 1904’. The canvas is relined and shows light marks, where the frame has rubbed. The varnish is clearly browned, especially in the areas of the sky. The stucco frame is in good condition with small traces of age and use. The framed work measures 47 x 56 cm and the size of the stretcher is 28.5 x 37 cm.
Ferdinand Knab (1834-1902)
Ferdinand Knab was born in Würzburg and was initially trained in architecture. In 1859 he moved to Munich, where he attended the painting classes of Arthur von Ramberg (1819-1875) and Carl Theodor von Piloty (1826-1886). Later in 1868 he traveled to Italy, where he discovered his passion for romantic Ruin landscapes. Ferdinand Knab was a very sought after artist during his life time and was occasionally commissioned by Ludwig II of Bavaria for the Munich Residenz and the Linderhof Palace. (cbo)
