The present painting is a large-scale work by the Swiss artist Nikolai Tregor and is titled ‘Hände’ (hands). It shows two female nudes at the lower end, stretching their bodies with spread hands and orange fingernails in front of a French door. Shadowy faces and further hands appear behind the glass as if they would react on the movements of the women. The painting reminds of Tregor’s expressive sculptures, whose surfaces similarly oscillate in the light. The erotic tension of the models is noticeably enhanced by the neon-colored accentuations on their bodies.



The painting is in very good condition. It is titled, signed with monogram and dated verso on the stretcher ‘‘Hände‘ N.T. 1996’. Besides, the stretcher also bears the archive number ‘MD 012/113.97’. The overall dimensions of the unframed work are 200 x 100 cm.



Nikolai Tregor (b. 1946)


Nikolai Tregor trained as a bronze caster in Munich. After his apprenticeship he opened his own foundry, which was very popular among Munich artists. Several public commissions to design various medals and commemorative coins followed soon. During medical studies, Tregor deepened his understanding of human anatomy, which is evident in his life-like sculptures. In the following years he created numerous bronze busts of famous figures, including Franz Josef Strauss, Sophie Scholl and Andy Warhol. Tregor exhibited his work in New York and worked in the US for a period of time. Since 1972 Nikolai Tregor lives and works as a freelance sculptor in Munich. In addition to his bronzes Tregor also creates experimental wire sculptures and large-scale paintings painting. Works by the artist are held in private and public collections in Paris, Vienna, Tokyo, Graz, Salzburg and Dresden.(cbo)
