Karel Appel's works are fascinating because of their bright colors and simplistic forms; lithographs in colors fetch up to €2,400 at international auctions

The lithograph in colors from 1979 shows a seemingly abstract composition in bold colors that is formed with broad brushstrokes. By a close look you can see an animal-like figure. The colors are brought to light by the dark blue ground. The almost naïve style of painting is typical of the artist and shows the impact of the CoBrA group.

The lithograph in colors is signed lower left with white crayon ‘Appel’ and numbered lower right with white crayon ‘111/175’. The sheet is mounted to a passepartout along the reverse upper sheet edge with brown adhesive tape. It bears a small backed tear (1.8 cm) in the lower sheet edge. The lower corners are minor bumped. The overall impression is very good. The frame is in good condition with slight signs of wear. The image is printed to the edges and measures 52.3 x 75.2 cm. The framed dimensions are 105.5 x 85 cm

Karel Appel (1921-2006)

The Dutch artist Christiaan Karel Appel studied at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam and founded with other artists the CoBrA group in 1948. In 1950 he moved to Paris. In 1953 he managed his international breakthrough when he exhibited at the Biennale in Sao Paulo and his works were awarded there several times.
