Larry Yust gives his ‘Photographic Elevations’ an almost exaggerated horizontality and thus casts the simultaneity of events of urban life into impressionistic genre ‘paintings’

Larry Yust started to produce his ‘Photographic Elevations’, when working on a film in Paris, where he had to examine the Metro stations. Deeply impressed by the diversity of their architectural styles, he finally started to photograph them by walking up and down the platforms, in order to take a frontal picture of every part of his motif. Thanks to Photoshop, Larry was later able to merge the overlapping images into one piece without facing distortions, as usually known from panorama cameras. The present work depicts the station ‘Porte de Montreuil’ with the train number nine passing through. The picture is an impressive example of Larry Yust’s digitally created visual effect that slightly reminds of architectural drawings.



The Lambda color print is in mint condition. It is number 44 from a limited edition of 100 copies and has been laminated on Alu-Dibond. The image size is equal to the sheet size of 21.5 x 180 cm. The Signed LUMAS edition certificate with all typographic indications on the work is attached to the verso; it is signed by the artist ‘Larry Yust’.



Larry Yust

Larry Yust was born in Philadelphia and grew up in the suburbs of New York and Chicago. He studied theater sciences at Stanford University and started to work as a scriptwriter and director. In 2000, Yust bought a computer, scanner and printer and applied himself to digital photography. His works are characterized as so called ‘Photographic Elevations’ and are usually created out of ten to hundred overlapping pictures. A selection of his photographic output has already been presented in solo exhibitions at LA County Museum of Science and Industry, the Fowler Museum at UCLA and the Louvre. Besides, examples of his works are already included in the collection of the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore. (cbo)
