César once said in an interview that he was not an intellectual artist, but rather a craftsman entirely guided by his emotion and by the ‘logic of the material’. As a sculptor he was always interested in the use of unusual materials such as iron, lead foil and parts of scrap with which he built his impressive figures and animals. The present sculpture is work after César and consists of bronze. The work corresponds to the formal language of the artist and suggests that its model was made of screws, winds and pieces of scrap.

The sculpture is in very good condition with minimal traces of use. The figure was welded on a round base. It measures c. 100 cm in height and the diameter of the base is 37 cm.

César, in fact César Baldaccini (1921-1998)

César, whose full name César Baldaccini is hardly known, was born in Marseille. He began his artistic training at the age of 14 years, when attending the École des Beaux-Arts at his city of birth. In 1943 he moved to Paris, where he deepened his studies at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. He finally graduated as a student of Marcel Gimond (1894-1961) in 1947. In these years, he already met artists like Picasso and Giacometti, whose anti-academic attitude deeply influenced his later artistic development. In the 1950s, César started to work with scrap and industrial waste. In 1960, he joined the movement of Nouveau Réalisme and experienced his international breakthrough with his metal works, which he called ‘Compressions dirigées’. His later sculptures were inspired by Pop Art and Appropriation Art. César characterized a constant urge to extend the existing techniques in sculpture. Works of the renowned sculptor are represented in numerous international museums, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Ludwig Museum in Koblenz. (cbo)
