Ralf Kerbach is a well-known protagonist among the art scene in Dresden; the auction record for one of his paintings currently sets at around €9,000

Ralf Kerbach’s artistic output is deeply influenced by his personal experiences that bear witness to a childhood in the GDR, his emigration to West Berlin and the return to Dresden after the fall of the Wall. The 1980/90s, which were clearly determined by the feeling of change, encouraged Kerbach to develop a personal visual language, which shows neo-expressionist tendencies as well as traces of symbolism regarding his motifs. The present painting is a typical example of Kerbach’s period of artistic upheaval and shows a portrait of two sisters exposed to the silhouette of a man on the far right side. The girls first seem to look at him with serious and telling expression, but then tend to lose themselves in the distance, that also addresses us, the viewers.

A selection of the artist’s most important works will be on display at the Städtische Galerie Dresden, from 7 February to 10 May 2015.

The painting is in very good condition considering its age. The stretcher measures 51.5 x 61.5 cm.

Ralf Kerbach (b. 1956)

Born in Dresden, Ralf Kerbach studied at the local Academy of Fine Arts and attended the class of professor Gerhard Kettner, between 1977 and 1979. Kerbach has been active as a freelance artist, ever since. Besides, he was the co-founder of the punk band ‘Zwischenmaschine’. In 1982 Kerbach was forced to move to West Berlin, especially due to unofficial journalistic engagements. Scholarships and a number of artistic tasks enabled Ralf Kerbach to work in Olevano in 1986/87, in Paris in 1988, in Val Quieres near Montpellier from 1988 to 1990, and finally in Brazil in1991. Since 1992 Kerbach has held his position as professor of painting and graphic arts at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Dresden. In 2010 he became a member of the Sächsische Akademie der Künste. The artist lives and works in Dresden and in Biesenthal near Berlin. (cbo)
