The ‘Nanas’ originating from 1964 on made Niki de Saint Phalle internationally known. In this small-sized sculpture, too, two of these buxom and voluminous figures are dancing elated on the blue base. They wear cheerfully colored swimwear, which emphasizes the impression of lightness and joy. From the edition of 150 plus 20 EA's. Edition Micheline Szwajcer, Atelier Robert Haligon.

The painted polyester sculpture is provided with the embossed signature ‘Niki’ and numbered in black felt tip pen ‘61/150’. It is in very good condition with only insignificant surface soiling. The sculpture measures 47 x 39 x 34 cm.

Niki de Saint Phalle (1930-2002)

The artist Niki de Saint Phalle was born in Neuilly-sur-Seine in 1930 and has received worldwide reputation for her ‘Nana’ figures. In the early 1950s, she already created her first paintings, but was still preliminary working as a performance artist. Only in 1964, she developed her first female figures with lush round shapes and called them ‘Nana’. Four years later she participated in an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, which was followed by numerous exhibitions in Germany, France, Holland, Italy and the USA. Niki de Saint Phalle often described art as her redemption and an absolute necessity in her life. (fea)
