1857 Smith’s Patent Percussion Carbine. Partial octagon barrel measures 21.5 in. long, .50 caliber, percussion cap & ball, rifled bore, break action breech loading, saddle ring on left side, walnut stock with oiled original finish, barrel has a very dark brown patina. Signed in 3 places on the right side of the frame “Smith’s Patent – June 23, 1857”, “Address - Poultney & Trimble – Baltimore, U.S.A.” (distributor) & “Manufactured By - Am'n. M'ch'n. Wks - Springfield, Mass.”. Inspectors marks: “J.H.” in an oval on the left of the stock, “L.F.P.” on the left flat at the breech of the barrel. Cocks, half cocks, trigger fires and break action & button function smooth and tight. 39 in. overall length.
