Typical impressionist silhouette of a port city with sailing boats

This atmospheric townscape is a work of the Dutch artist Hermanus II Koekkoek, who was a member of the famous Koekkoek dynasty of artists and presumably painted the piece in London, where he resided since 1863. Along a low horizontal line, the artist presents the silhouette of a harbor city, with a few sailing boats in the water before the quay wall. The composition captivates through its gentle light effects and the artist’s typical impressionistic style.

The painting is in good condition considering its age. It is signed with the artist’s pseudonym lower left ‘J van Couver’. There are tiny abrasions in the paint surface as well as a few areas of retouching, especially along the edges. The gilded frame only shows small traces of age. It features a small paper note on the verso, reading further details about the artist. The framed work measures 52 x 66.5 cm and the size of the stretcher is 35 x 49.5 cm.

Hermanus II Koekkoek (1836-1909)

Hermanus II Koekkoek belonged to the Dutch artist family ‘Koekkoek’, whose origin dates back to the 18th century. The young painter received his artistic training from his father, Hermanus I Koekkoek (1815-1882), who was a well-established marine painter and a member of the Royal Academy of Arts. Hermanus II Koekkoek was born in Amsterdam and moved from 1859 to 1860 to Amstelveen, followed by a first stay in London (1863), where he finally returned in 1863 to settle permanently. Like his father, Hermanus II Koekkoek also focused on the depiction of seascapes, which were occasionally also signed with the pseudonym ‘J Van couver’. Parallel to his artistic career, Hermanus II Koekkoek was also active as an art dealer in London. Today, his works are represented in many private collections.
