Strikingly beautiful seascape in an impressionist manner. The current highest bid for a similar oil painting by Pavel Svedomsky is around €38,000

This enchanting seascape by Pavel Svedomsky (1849-1904) depicts a masterly captured ocean view at sunset. The glowing sunset is reflected beautifully on the glistening water surface. Some seagulls and sailboats can be seen in the distance. The wide, almost visionary horizon is rendered with an atmospheric lighting. In the foreground, the foam beats against the brown tinted rocks, which are reflected in the wet sand. This is a nostalgic masterpiece of unsurpassable beauty.

The painting is signed with ‘?. (…) Svedomskij’ lower right. It is in good condition, showing light abrasion and pressure marks from the stretcher. Inspection under UV light reveals some major areas of retouching to the sky. The frame shows small restorations and chips. The image dimensions are 71 x 100 cm, and the overall dimensions, including the frame, are 88 x 117 cm.

Pavel Alexandrovich Svedomsky (1849-1904)

Born in St. Petersburg, the painter Pavel Alexandrovich Svedomsky was a descendant of a Russian noble family and studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy in Munich with Eduard von Gebhardt and Mihály Munkácsy. In 1875, he settled in Rome. Svedomsky’s favorite subjects were history paintings. The famous painting of the ‘Medusa’ (1882) is today on display at the Moscow Tretyakov Gallery. In Kiev, Svedomsky created paintings for the St. Vladimir Cathedral, depicting scenes from the life of Christ. In his later work, the artist went on to represent Russian themes.
