In the present painting Palmié depicted an atmospheric landscape motif. The focal point is a large, old mill standing abandoned on a hill with a river running in the background. The artist rendered the composition with rough, broad brushstrokes and the muted color scheme emphasizes the melancholic mood.
The painting is signed lower right ‘Charles J. Palmié.’. It is in good condition. There are a few tiny color chips here and there as well as a few minor retouchings. The frame shows light wear. The framed work measures 115 x 141 cm, the stretcher frame measures 108 x 134.5 cm.
Charles Johann Palmié (1863-1911)
At the age of 14 Charles Johann Palmié trained as a stage painter at the Dresden Academy. In Dresden he received many commission such as for the Leonhardi-Museum. In 1884 he moved to Munich where he continued his studies with August Fink. From 1886 Palmié worked as an artist, he was a founding member of the Neuen Künstlervereinigung München. In the following years he undertook numerous travels, especially to the Alps, and made gained recognition as a landscape and still life painter. He initially painted in the manner of the Biedermeier, whereas his later works showed a strong influence of Impressionism. (tfa)
