Atmospheric watercolor of a barnyard in summery twilight

This watercolor with pencil and charcoal was made in 1907 by German painter Adolf Noether and displays a view of the Saxon village Ostrau. The depicted barnyards are immerged in gentle evening light, a last reddish glimmer of the setting sun is visible in the sky. The sketchy and dusky design of the rural environment supports the impression of the night slowly settling in.



The mounted work is in a good condition with slight signs of age and wear. The sides show signs of an earlier framing, at those parts the sheet is creased and the surface shows craquelure. Furthermore there are a couple of pinholes that are partially retouched. The glass frame is in a mint condition. The dimensions of the image are 33 x 45 cm, while the framed dimensions measure 56 x 66 cm.



Adolf Noether (1855-1943)

The artist Adolf Emil Noether was born on the 9th of December 1855 in Dresden. During his studies he met the famous painter Ludwig Richter. Over the years, Noether developed his own particular mixing technique for watercolor painting that is now characteristical for his oeuvre. He used charcoal and pencil to thicken contours for adding depth and expression to his pictures. (nlu)
