This romantic painting by Carl Hilgers depicts a winter scene on a frozen canal. Merchants have pitched their tents and groups of people are having fun on the ice. Several seagulls animate the densely clouded sky. The detailed figural scene shows Hilgers’s fine, loose brushwork and illustrates his incredible attention to detail. Influenced by the Dutch old masters of the 16th and 17th centuries, the painter created numerous delicately colored landscapes of this kind, which are characterized by a superior painterly quality and technical precision.

The painting is signed lower left ‘C. Hilgers’. It is in good condition. Inspection under UV-light reveals scattered retouchings to the sky, the edges and partly the figural scene. The frame shows light wear. The framed work measures 29.5 x 33.5 cm, the panel measures 20 x 24 cm.

Carl Hilgers (1818-1890)

Carl Hilgers took drawing classes at the Düsseldorf Academy and later studied under Johann Wilhelm Schirmer. He was a member of the artists' association ‘Malkasten’ and undertook numerous travels through Germany as well as to Holland, Belgium and France. After a short stay in Berlin, he returned to Dusseldorf where he was active for the rest of his life. Hilgers’s extensive and thematically diverse oeuvre includes primarily romantic landscape motifs, including winter landscapes and river scenes in the Dutch tradition. (tfa)
