Heerschop created numerous genre paintings that usually depict bourgeois interiors with physicians, alchemists and painters at work; his smaller paintings fetch up to €14,400 on the international auction market

This painting is attributed to the Dutch painter Hendrik Heerschop and depicts two business men counting and weighing money before a table scattered with different tools. One of the gentlemen is examining a coin under a magnifying glass, while the other has turned his head looking directly at the viewer. Heerschop specialized in genre paintings of this kind, in which he rendered doctors, artists or scholars at work, presenting his characters elaborate interiors surrounded by all sorts of instruments and utensils.



A letter from the Gemeentelijk Museum, Haarlem, dated 2 May 1914, is enclosed.



The painting was slightly damaged in the lower part and was restored in 2009. Inspection under UV light reveals small retouchings to the edges. The frame shows some wear. The framed work measures 47 x 38.5 cm, the wood panel measures 34 x 25.5 cm.



Hendrick Heerschop (c.1620-c.1672)

Hendrick Heerschop was born in Haarlem, where he was a pupil of Willem Claesz. Heda. He is also said to have apprenticed to Rembrandt in Amsterdam. From 1648, he was a member of the Guild of St. Luke. In addition to some portraits and still lifes, Heerschop painted mainly genre and history paintings with ancient and biblical themes. His genre paintings usually depict doctors, alchemists and painter in bourgeois interiors, some of which are reminiscent of Gerrit Dou and Karel van der Pluym. In addition Heerschop also created some etchings which show the influence of Rembrandt.
