Switzerland, around 1900
Arthur Calame (1843-1919) – Swiss landscape painter
Signed lower left ‘A. Calame’
Dimensions: 35.5 x 51.3 cm
Very good condition
Provenance: Private collection, Germany
Arthur Calame was a successful landscape painter and received his artistic training by representatives of the Dusseldorf School; the auction record for one of his paintings currently sets at around €98,000

The present painting shows a view of a dense birch forest and is a rather unusual work by the Swiss artist Arthur Calame, who tended towards wide and slightly romantic landscape compositions. Here, the image section is however very narrowly defined, so that the sky is hardly visible through the thicket. The painting was rendered a charming atmosphere through the small lighting accents, as known from a walk in the forest.

The painting is signed lower left ‘A. Calame’. The canvas is relined. Inspection under UV light reveals small areas of retouching. The painting is however in very good condition considering its age. The image size is 35.5 x 51.3 cm. The frame is only affected by tiny marks and measures 49 x 65 cm.

Arthur Calame (1843-1919)

Jean Baptiste Arthur Calame was born in Geneva. Between 1864 and 1867, he studied under Oswald Achenbach (1827-1905) in Dusseldorf. The (Italian) landscape was his most preferred motif, whereas the interpretation of light was also of great interest to the artist. A well-established artist, he had the chance to exhibited his works in Berlin, Dresden, Vienna, Munich and Switzerland. Besides, he was also interested in etching, because it helped him to document his impressions of his travels through France, Italy and Switzerland. Examples of his artistic output are now included in the museum collections in Geneva, Berne, Basle and Schaffhausen. (cbo)
