Typical female figure by Jeanne Mammen; portrait drawings by the artist fetch up to €6,000 on the international auction market

The present work was created by the Berlin illustrator Jeanne Mammen. It was drawn in pencil in strong short lines. The drawing shows the portrait of a seated Lady in three-quarter profile with fashionable haircut and pearl necklace. The distinctive caricaturing style of the artist shows in the field of portraiture too.

The sheet is monogrammed in pencil with “JM” lower right. It is mounted under a mat to some points and framed under glass. The sheet is in good condition, showing a light discoloration of the paper, some crease marks and blemishes due to age. The overall size, including the frame, are 67 x 55.7 cm. The sheet dimensions are 50.2 x 38.4 cm.

Jeanne Mammen (1890-1976)

Jeanne Mammen was a famous German painter and drawer, who began working as a fashion illustrator, before she worked as a caricaturist for such renowned magazines as the ‘Simplicissimus’, the ‘Ulk’ and the ‘Junggeselle’. She depicted the people from the street in various gestures and situations. Her works have been exhibited in numerous exhibitions worldwide. (bed)
