Finely carved cameo brooch with an interesting historicist motif

This large brooch consists of a cameo brooch in a filigree openwork frame made of 14 karat gold. The cameo depicts a finely carved mythological scene, showing Poseidon, the god of the sea, together with seahorses. With his right arm, he pushed his trident into a rock; to his lower right Cecrops is displayed, the mythical king of Attica. The scene alludes to the legend of Athena and Poseidon, who battled for the patronage of Attica.

The brooch is in very good condition with only minor signs of wear. It measures 5 x 6 cm and has a weight of approximately 19.5 grams. (cko)
