Otto Dix (1891-1969)

Wilhelm Heinrich Otto Dix is considered one of the most famous German painters and printmakers of the 20th Century, and he was one of the co-founders of New Objectivity. He initially trained as a decoration painter in his hometown. From 1910 to 1914, he studied at the arts college in Dresden. He co-founded the Dresden Secession in 1919. His most well-known works are from the Weimar period, sometimes humorous but often harshly criticizing the social conditions in the postwar period. Dix was a professor at the arts academy in Dresden until he was expelled after the Nazis took over in 1933. The artist left behind an extensive body of work of over 6,000 drawings and sketches. Works by Otto Dix are located in numerous international public collections, like the Metropolitan Museum of New York, the Réunion des Musées Nationaux of France, the National Galleries of Scotland in Edinburgh, the GAM (Galleria Civica d’arte Moderna e Contemporanea) in Turin, the Kunstmuseum Basel, the Berlinischen Galerie in Berlin, and the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart.
