Salvador Dalí is one of the most demanded artists of the 20th century; prints by the artist fetch up to €21,300 at international auctions

This plate is from the suite ‘Faust (Le nuit de Walpurgis)’, that Salvador Dalí created in 1969. It comprises 21 plates and was published in different editions as book edition as well as single edition. During the 1960s, Dalí dealt with illustrations of important texts of world literature and so Johann Wolfgang Goethe's ‘Faust’ has to be among them.

The etching, worked over by hand, is signed lower right in pencil ‘Dali’ and provided with the signature stamp. Lower left it is numbered in pencil ‘43/100‘. The sheet shows very occasional spots of darkness, the lower left corner is minor bumped. Overall the condition is good. The frame is in good condition, too, with slight signs of wear. The plate measures 17.5 x 12 cm, the sheet 38.7 x 29.1 cm. The framed dimensions are 50 x 44 cm.

The Spanish painter, graphic artist and sculptor Salvador Dalí was one of the main representatives of Surrealism. Already during his school days he took private painting and drawing classes and studied from 1922 at the Academia San Fernando in Madrid, but was expelled for disorderly conduct in 1926. In 1929, Dalí joined the Surrealists in Paris and met Gala, his muse and future wife. Today his dreamy works, influenced by the unconscious, are displayed in collections of important international international museums.
