A very beautiful and typical selection of the illustrations for Rafael Alberti’s ‘Maravillas con variaciones acrósticas en el jardín de Miró’; the auction record for the complete book edition is currently set at €9,000

In 1971 the Spanish poet Rafael Alberti contacted Joan Miró to create in his honor and together with him a portfolio. After a long correspondence Alberti sent the manuscript titled ‘Maravillas of variaciones acrósticas en el jardín de Miró’ to Miró in 1973. Two years later the work was published with 20 lithographs in colors by the artist by Ediciones Polígrafa in Barcelona. It was issued in 75 + XV copies with signed and numbered lithographs and 225 copies that were signed in the justification by the artist and the author. Additionally there was also a book edition of 1500 copies published, from which the present plates are, with the lithographs only signed on stone.

The seven lithographs in colors are each signed lower right on the stone ‘Miró’. The plates partially show small creases in occasional corners. Plate eight and plate 20 are minor soiled in the lower margin, plate 17 is inscribed with pencil by another hand in the lower right corner. Plate 18 shows an unobtrusive pressure mark and a faintly visible color trace in the lower margin. Overall the condition of the sheets is good. The sheets measure each around 50 x 35.8 cm.

Joan Miró (1893-1983)

Miró was born in Barcelona where he grew up and started his artistic studies. He went to the academy La Llotja against his parents’ will who had wanted him to work in a more traditional way. He later studied at the Escola d’Art from Francesc Galí and got to know the Fauves and the cubists. In 1920 he moved to Paris where he lived amongst the most creative artists of his time. He got to know Arp, Magritte, Brancusi and Giacometti and exhibited together with Dalí, Tanguy, Meret Oppenheim und Max Ernst in several exhibitions about Dadaism and Surrealism. He moved to Mallorca in 1956 where he focused first on sculptures and later on ceramics. (fea)
