In his typical design vocabulary Joan Miró shows in this lithograph in colors a twinkling star-spattered sky. The stand-out red color accent slightly below the center of the picture is certainly the eponymous giant star Betelgeuse in the constellation of Orion which raises of the surrounding stars due to its great brightness.

The lithograph in colors is signed lower right in pencil ‘Miró’, and numbered lower left 56/75. The red in the image is, as well as the purple lower right significantly faded. The sheet is slightly mat-stained along the edges. Additionally the upper right margin shows a few creases. The sheet is mounted to a mat along the reverse upper edge as well as at four further spots. The cloth covered frame with gold colored inner bar shows significant signs of use and age. The image measures 76.5 x 57.8 cm, the sheet 80.8 x 58.7 cm. The framed dimensions are 98.5 x 74.5 cm.

Joan Miró (1893-1983)

Miró was born in Barcelona where he grew up and started his artistic studies. He went to the academy La Llotja against his parents’ will who had wanted him to work in a more traditional way. He later studied at the Escola d’Art of Francesc Galí where he got to know the Fauves and the cubists. In 1920 he moved to Paris where he lived amongst the most creative artists of his time. He got to know Arp, Magritte, Brancusi and Giacometti and exhibited together with Dalí, Tanguy, Meret Oppenheim und Max Ernst in several exhibitions about Dadaism and Surrealism. He moved to Mallorca in 1956 where he focused first on sculptures and later on ceramics. (fea)
