With this poster, the opponents of the Wendland nuclear waste deposit in Gorleben called for resistance against the ‘Day X’, the day of the first delivery. Joseph Beuys added to the setting copy handwritten remarks and his signature in order to take a stance against the impending criminalization of this resistance by the state. This present copy is also signed by him.

The poster is signed lower right with red felt pen ‘Joseph Beuys’. It bears slight signs of use like very occasional short tears (up to 1.6 cm) and defects. It is mounted to a support at three spots on verso and is overall in good condition. The frame is also in good condition with only minor signs of wear. The poster measures 59.5 x 41.8 cm. The framed dimensions are 83.7 x 65 cm.

Joseph Beuys (1921-1986)

Born in Krefeld in 1921, Joseph Beuys was one of the most important German artists of the second half of the 20th Century. After his military service at the German Air Force and his legendary plane crash in 1944, Beuys began his career as an artist as the master pupil of Ewald Mataré at the Stately Art Academy in Düsseldorf. Early on, the artist received numerous commissions and in 1961 he was called to the Düsseldorf Academy as a professor. Beuys’s works were exhibited at the documenta III in Kassel and the 37th Venice Biennale and were honored with many international awards. In 1979, Beuys met Andy Warhol, who created the famous silkscreen portrait of the artist. In 1986 Beuys died at the age of 64 in his studio in Düsseldorf. His works can be found in many international museums such as the Tate Modern in London, The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the Museum Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin. (fea)
