Description
shepherdess and goats in landscape, distant village at base of mountains, unsigned, possibly Thomas Cole, New York, 1801-1848, oil on canvas, 22 x 30-1/8 in.; 19th century gilt wood cushion and cove molding frame. Lined, two periods of restoration, retouch throughout sky and at bottom affecting 40 percent of surface, possibly overcleaned at some point, crackle; frame with losses to gesso and gilding. Provenance: Found in a basement in Upstate New York by Theodora Viegner, prior to 1970; The Old Stonehouse Gallery, Anglewood, New Jersey; Passaglia Collection, purchased early 1970s. A letter from Alan Wallach discussing authorship of the painting accompanies lot.
