Description
Netsuke, wood. Japan, 19th cent.
A boy seated on the ground with crossed legs. In front of his face he is holding an Oni-mask, a devil with horns. This carving is with much consideration for composition, which is primarily orientated towards the front. It is almost entirely symmetrical, only one foot with tabi deviates slightly. The grimaced mask is being flanked by the large, somewhat curved sleeves. Meticulous rendition of the folds and hairs, himotoshi underneath. Outstanding well-rounded form, neat colouring and patina, very good condition.
HEIGHT 3,55 CM
