Description
Netsuke, wood. Japan, 1st half of 19th cent.
An amusingly composed group with the large-headed “lucky dwarf†Fukusuke, holding a folding fan and sitting behind a small table with a money-pouch on top. Laughing next to him with the typical face-form is the hilarious (and lascivious) Shinto-goddess Okame, famous for her naked dance, which she once performed in front of the cave where the sun goddess Amaterasu was hiding. Okame is one of the most popular figures of Japan. On the underside, himotoshi through one leg and the table, the signature HIDE-SADA on the other leg of the Fukusuke. Good colouring and patina, very good condition.
WIDTH 4 CM
