Description
Glazed ceramic. Khmer, 11th to 12th cent.
Of typical bulbous compressed form, bearing owl eyes, on one side a small conical spout rendered as the beak, the opposed side with a loop handle formed as a bird, the center opening of the vessel presents a bulging lip, the body incised with a line pattern; black-brown scarred surface, restored sections.

From the collection of a German art trader
Ceramics from the old Kingdom of Khmer are character fully distinguishing from the ceramics originating from other countries. The Angkor temple architecture is found to be unique, so are the ceramic vessels that were never meant for export that reflect this universe in a truly singular way. Ceramic art of the Khmer is rare. Being produced in large quantities possibly only during a shorter period of time – from about the 11th to the13th century, a relatively small amount of objects in good condition are preserved.
