Steven Alan Kaufman (Dec 29 1960 Feb 12 2010) was an American pop artist, fine artist, sculptor, stained glass artist, filmmaker, photographer and humanitarian.
His entry into the world of serious pop art began in his teens when he became an assistant to Andy Warhol at The Factory studio.

By the time he was 16, Kaufman was going to Studio 54 and associating with people from the 1970s New York City art community.

Kaufman attended Manhattan's School of Visual Arts (SVA). In 1981 Kaufman met Andy Warhol, who became a significant influence on the 19-year-old Kaufman, who worked as Warhohl's assistant at his studio, The Factory, producing original paintings and silkscreens. Kaufman designed theme parties for various nightclubs, sold his paintings to Calvin Klein and Steve Rubell, and participated in a group art show with pop artist Keith Haring, whom he had met at the SVA.

Leaving Warhol's Factory, Kaufman established his own SAK Studio, hiring homeless New Yorkers to assist him. He painted portraits of three homeless persons, helping to raise $4.72 million to benefit the homeless. Kaufman created the first "Racial Harmony" mural in Harlem to raise attention of inner-city problems. He showed at the White Gallery as a tribute to those who died from AIDS.

In 1993, Kaufman moved his studio to Los Angeles and began painting in a new style he called 'comic book pop art'. He used images of Superman, Batman, Spider-Man and others. To assist him in his studio, Kaufman hired more than 100 ex-gang members released from prison.
Becoming the first artist create a bridge between Marvel Comics (Spiderman) and DC Comics (Superman), Kaufman worked with comic book artist and creator Stan Lee.

Kaufman suffered a series of debilitating strokes beginning in 2004, dying of a heart attack on February 12, 2010, as he prepared for an art show.
"If I stop doing shows, I might as well stop living. This is what I live for," Kaufman had once stated. "I had a great life, so please don't cry for me. I've had the life of 100 men," he wrote.

Sein Einstieg in die Pop Art Szene begann als Teenager, als er Andy Warhols Assistent in dessen The Factory Studio wurde.

Mit 16 ging Kaufman zum Studio 54 und kam mit der New Yorker Künstlergemeinschaft der 1970er in Kontakt.

Kaufman besuchte die Manhattan School of Visual Arts (SVA). 1981 traf er Andy Warhol, welcher ein signifikanter Einfluss für den 19 jährigen Kaufman wurde. Er arbeitete als Assistent in Warhols Studio, The Factory, wo er Gemälde und Siebdrucke schuf. Kaufman designte Themenpartys für unterschiedliche Nachtclubs, verkaufte seine Gemälde an Calvin Klein und Steve Rubell, und nahm an einer Gruppenausstellung mit Pop Artist Keith Haring teil, welchen er auf der SVA kennen lernte.

Kaufman verlies Warhols The Factory und gründete sein eigenes Studio, SAK Studio, wo er obdachlose New Yorker als Assistenten anheuerte. Für eine Kampange malte er Portraits von drei Obdachlosen und half damit 7,72 Millionen Dollar in Spenden für Obdachlose zu erheben. Kaufman schuf das erste "Racial Harmony" Wandgemälde in Harlem, NYC, um auf inner-städtische Probleme hinzuweisen und diverse Projekte im Gedenken der Opfer von AIDS.

1993 übersiedelte er sein Studio nach Los Angeles und begann in einem neuen Stil zu malen, wlechen er "Comic Book Pop Art" nannte. Er benutzte Bilder von Superman, Batman, Spiderman und anderer Comic Superhelden. Hierfür heuerte er über 100 Ex-Gang Mitglieder, welche aus dem Gefängnis entlassen wurden, als Assistenten an. Kaufman wurde der erste Künstler, welcher ein Brücke zwischen Marvel Comics (Spiderman) und DC Comics (Superman) schuf und arbeitete unter Anderen mit Comic Künstler Stan Lee zusammen.

Kaufman erlitt eine Serie von Schlaganfällen beginnend in 2004 und starb an einem Herzinfarkt am 12. Februar 2010, während den Vorbereitungen für eine Kunst Show.

"Wenn ich damit aufhöre Shows zu machen, könnte ich genau so gut aufhören zu leben. Das ist wofür ich lebe.", erklärte er einmal. "Ich hatte ein großartiges Leben, also bitte weint nicht für mich. Ich habe das Leben von 100 Männern gehabt.", schrieb er.
