Description
Impressive tribute trophy awarded in the mid 1920s to the German Jewish boxer Harry Stein, by the 'Jüdischer Boxclub Maccabi' of Berlin on the occasion of his 30th fight. The trophy is etched with the logo of Maccabi Germany and the inscription "J.B.C. [Jüdischer Boxclub] Maccabi / zum 30 Kampf / gestiftet von / Harry Stein" [Jewish Boxing Club Maccabi / for 30 fights / given to / Harry Stein].
Harry Stein was born in 1905 in Bytom, Poland. He was one of the leading boxers in Germany during the 1920s and the German flyweight (51 kg) champion in 1922-23. In 1933 he emigrated to Prague, from where he escaped to the Soviet Union to get away from Nazi persecution. In the 1940s he was active as a trainer in Moscow. His date and place of death are unknown.
The trophy was manufactured by the German tableware firm WMF. This specific piece was created by WMF artisans in the 1910s in the late Art Nouveau style. Silver plated brass, chased.
Height 27.5cm, diameter 14cm. Silverplating worn in several spots.
