Description:
William Yates. Rights of Colored Men to Suffrage, Citizenship and Trial by Jury, Being a Book of Facts, Arguments and Authorities, Historical Notices and Sketches of Debates - With Notes (Philadelphia, 1838) 104pp. Disbound, without wrappers, removed from larger volume. First Edition.
Yates was an agent of the Anti-Slavery Society who focused, not on the oppression of enslaved Blacks in the South, but on free African-American men in the north who were still denied the right to vote and other civil rights in New York and other northern states. A very early statement of this overlooked injustice.
