Description:
Stanford, John R. Autograph Letter Signed. Clarksville, Georgia, Aug. 3, 1840. 2pp.+ stampless address leaf. To Thomas B. Cooper, Cedar Bluff, Alabama. Reportedly a cousin of the wealthy Civil War Governor of California, Stanford of Georgia was a slave-owner with close ties to future leading lights of the Confederacy.
He writes during the presidential election campaign: "...I am not very deeply engaged in politics... I do not go for Tip & Tyler and I am astonished that any sensible Southern man should...if Harrison comes in he will owe his election mainly to the Northern Whigs and Abolitionists. I do not pretend to say that old Tip is either of these, but he is an old man, rather too old for the presidency and if elected must think himself obliged in a great measure to consult those to whom he is indebted for his election. I do not propagate nor believe the slanders of Abolitionism, Federalism and cowardice published against the old general who has been a good patriot, but I cannot support him..."
