Description
Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Manabà Province, ca. 300 BCE to 600 CE. The Jama Coaque culture of the Pacific coast of Ecuador is known for its pottery, especially large, highly adorned, mold-made human figures of elite status such as this example. The artist of this piece ornamented this figure with a grand helmet, nose ornament, pendant necklace, wrist cuffs, and perhaps most impressive, handsome, bold epaulet-like shoulder ornaments. His cross-legged position likely indicates immersion in a ceremony or cultural ritual. Clearly this piece depicted a highly revered individual.
