Description
3rd Dynasty of Ur, 21st-20th century BC. A pillow-shaped clay tablet with cuneiform text to both broad faces; accompanied by an old scholarly note, handwritten and signed by W.G. Lambert, late Professor of Assyriology, University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: 'Copy of Sumerian letter to a king from Sîn-ellassu: Old Babylonian scribal copy in large clear hand. Probably from end of 3rd Dynasty of Ur, c.2000 B.C.Refers to a military campaign. 72x54mm'; old collector's label 'J' to one edge and accompanying note. 101 grams, 72mm (3"). Acquired on the London art market prior to 1980. The collector's note describes the text as 'a well-known letter from an official Sin-allassu to his king, known from other examples to be King Iddin-Dagan of Isin. It speaks of military matters involving the city Kakulatum, and the Amorite problem. This and other letters were used as scribal practice in the later Old Babylonian schools, and there are many variants and expansion in the various exemplars.'
