Description
HARRY HERMAN ROSELAND (AMERICAN, 1868-1950) THE PALMIST. Oil on canvas. Signed upper left middle. Circa 1916 (Title and date via sticker en verso) Canvas: 14'' x 20'' Frame: 20'' x 25.5''
Condition
This piece has some signs of light restoration. There are some over-cleaning with light pigment loss on the right figures hand, to the brown frame form, and around the floor below the palm reader's feet and the bottom right corner. The paint appears to have been heated in restoration and there is light impasto crushing. There is a faint crackle texture through out, and some actual crackle and craquelure scattering the painting. There are several pen tip sized - .25" diameter chips to the painted surface with pigment loss scattered throughout. There is some scuffing and light cracking around the perimeter of the painting where the frame has been rubbing the surface. Under black light there is a light varnish layer, this layer is probably helping stabilize some of the crackle. There is also a 1" diameter section of over-painting to the wall to the right of the right figure's head. This is not detectable to the naked eye. This piece has not been lined. There are a couple pen tip sized holes to the top left corner that appear to be from the maker.
