Billy Price (Hosmer) Carroll (American, 1920-2011, active China, 1965-1973), "Small Village among the Cliffs", 1968, ink on paper, signed and sealed lower left, dated and titled on label en verso, 47 1/2 in. x 23 1/2 in., mounted and framed. Provenance: By descent in the family of the artist. Exhibited: National Taiwan Arts Hall, Taipei Historical Museum, Taipei, 1969 Note: At the age of 45, Billy Price Carroll, already an accomplished painter in Western oils, travelled to Hong Kong where she was commissioned to paint a portrait of a local oil tycoon. There, Carroll fell in love with Chinese ink painting and began to study the new medium under local masters. She became so accomplished in the medium that, in 1969, she was invited to exhibit sixty-two paintings at the National Taiwan Arts Hall under the auspices of the Taiwan Historical Museum in Taipei. According to the April 1969 edition of Beautiful China: A Pictorial Monthly, "her Taipei exhibition of new, bolder styles in calligraphy, bamboo and seascape was so impressive that a celebrated artist, China's own First Lady, Madame Chiang, viewed the American artist's paintings."
