Description
Southeast Asia, Nepal, 19th century CE. A touching rendition of a bodhisattva standing atop a lotus flower carved from rosewood and painted with a golden hued gesso.  This is likely a depiction of the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, the pinnacle of mercy, compassion, kindness and love.  A bodhisattva being of Bodhi or enlightenment, is one who has earned the right to leave the world of suffering and is destined to become a Buddha; however has forgone the attainment of buddhahood and the  bliss of nirvana with a vow to save all children and a mission of compassion to selflessly assist others on their road toward enlightenment.  Size:  1 3/4"L x 4 1/4"W x 9"H.
