Description
Nepal or Bhutan, ca late 18th to early 19th century CE. Large and wonderfully expressive mask representing Nyelbum - the sinner. Painted in deep blue and yellow with wrinkled forehead and cheeks, large toothy smile and wide expressive eyes. Masks such as these were worn by shamans during rituals in order to protect the village, heal disease, and practice exorcism. Custom stand. Size: 12" H (30.5 cm), not including stand.
