Description
Pacific Northwest Coast, Early / Mid 20th century CE. Mask carved from whale bone with aged patina. Masks among Eskimo peoples served a variety of functions. Masks were made out of driftwood, animal skins, bones and feathers. They were often painted using bright colors. There are archeological miniature maskettes made of walrus ivory, coming from early Paleo-Eskimo and from early Dorset culture period. Size: 8-1/2"H x 5-1/2"W.

FINE CONDITION, THOUGH MASK HAS BEEN BROKEN INTO SEVERAL SECTIONS AND GLUED BACK VERY TIGHTLY AND FINE; SOME GLUE STAINING ALONG CRACK LINES.
