Description
Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Northern East Kasai, Songye tribe, early 20th century. Exceptional Songye carved wood male fetish figure on round base. This example shows a characteristically elongated torso framed by set apart arms with hands resting to either side of abdomen, an enlarged head with squared chin, open mouth, and triangular nose between enlarged recessed almondine eyes filled. Many brass bullins were attached to the head and face to counteract evil spirits and aggressors by channeling lightning against them. The red tukula powder in the eye cavities is a bishimba (fetish material) believed to infuse the fetish with magical powers. Carved from dense hardwood and shows a wonderful patina created via extensive use. Size: 12" tall, 13" with base.
