Item Details
Description
African, Ivory Coast Republic, Guro, early 20th century. Guro carvers produced particularly elegant art.  This wooden heddle pulley, decorated with an upright maiden, is no exception.  The artist displays expert carving technique; note the characteristically elongated face, long linear nose, slanted eyes, and high domed forehead.  An elaborate coiffure completes the visage.  The hole at the top of the head allowed the pulley to be attached to a loom.  A fine example on a custom, wood block stand.   Size:  10" tall.

Provenance: Pickard private collection, Oklahoma City, OK, collection begun in 1959 following university studies in Africa;  Stewart Warkow collection, NY, NY.

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
