Description
Heddle Pulley
Wood
This Guro heddle pulley still has its roller for the passage of warp threads to the weaver; in this case, a wood spool has been recycled from a spool of European commercial thread, as is quite common on older Guro and Baule heddle pulleys. A central groove carved into the spool helped keep the warp threads in line.
Like Baule heddle pulleys, those of the Guro are secular objects valued by their owners but without ritual significance. The weaver determines the image on the pulley, by which it is secured to the loom frame, facing him. Human female heads with refined, calm expressions, elaborate hairstyles, or combinations of hairstyles and animal horns are often seen, and lustrous black surfaces are common.
