Description
Garden House Scene by Marcel Harang, Oil on Canvas, Framed 24 1/2"x24", Unframed 21 1/2"x17 1/2". Harang was born in Paris in 1910 of middle class respectable parents. He undoubtedly inherits his talent from his mother's family, in as much as she and her entire family were musicians and sculptors. Harang, from his early years, wished to become an artist and he started working for engravers to get enough money to pay for his studies. He studied for some time in the Acadamies, especially Julian's in the Rue du Drayon, Paris, which is one of the finest in France. At a very early age, he started working for himself, painting everything he saw, wandering around the streets of Paris with his easel. Although he has twice been offered the Gold Medal which is the highest award in French Art, Harang refused it, stating that he did not seek that kind of fame. In his own defense, he points out that Utrillo and Picasso, who did likewise, did all right for themselves. Before the war (1939-1945) Harang painted with the brush. He joined the French Army at the outbreak of the war, was soon captured, tried to escape twice, spent 5 years in a German Concentration Camp and came out a complete physical and mental wreck. It was then that he developed his new technique and now paints almost exclusively with a palette brush.
