118, [1] pp. With frontispiece & 25 facsimile plates; printed tissue guards. 31x24 cm (12¼x9½"), cloth-backed boards, paper spine label. One of 252 copies printed on American handmade paper, and one of 148 copies with an original leaf printed by William Caxton. First Edition.
Scholarly and attractively produced study of the first English printer, with facsimiles of many early leaves, as well as an original leaf from the first edition of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, printed in 1476, "from an imperfect copy... formerly in Lord Ashburnham's library, having been purchased for this purpose by the Caxton Club." The leaf is inserted in the rear endpaper pocket. It has one hand-drawn initial in red, and the pencil number 345 on the recto; slip of paper with printed number 354 pasted to front pastedown. This is evidently the folio number.
