Description:
Ink signature, on 1.3x6 cm (½x2¼") clippped paper, mounted on backing, set in gilt lettered green morocco folder with moiré silk matting & mounted portrait of Milton. Overall 28x22 cm. (11x8¾").
Rare signature of one of the giants of English literature, best know for his epic poem Paradise Lost, and the sequel, Paradise Regained. With a photocopy of an old catalog description by Kenneth Rendell, offering the piece, "a legendary rarity of autograph material." This is a genuine signature of Milton before he went blind (in 1665), not by an amanuensis who typically signed for him after 1665. Milton's genuine signatures are quite rare, perhaps the greatest autograph in English literature after Shakespeare, which is unobtainable.
Condition
The folder is bowed, with some darkening to the silk matting; the signature is fine.
