Item Details
Description
KATANGA CROSS USED IN AFRICAN SLAVE TRADE Cast copper cross which was once used as a form of currency in parts of what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Katanga was a region rich in copper and these crosses were accumulated and at times traded for slaves ultimately exported to the Americas. Our example measures 9 1/2"" x 9 1/4"" x 3/8"" thick. An evocative reminder of the cross-Atlantic slave trade.
