Written during the 2nd Opium War (1856-60). In part: ""…Here is…the correspondence…I think Bowring seems to have tried to diplomatize Anstey into doing more than your despatch required' I don't remember having received any letter from Bowring about this dispute…Bowring has however been doing such good work with the Chinese that one must forget any little mistake he may have made. It is rather amazing to find how vigorous these men of peaceful commerce become when they are charged with responsibility…"".
